Your First Long-Term Sick Leave, With No HR

A local entity of five people usually has no HR function. Contracts and payroll sit with someone who also does another job. That arrangement works until the first long sick leave.

The same obligations, fewer people

The statutory position does not scale down with the office. The employer carries wage payment for up to two years, and the reintegration process comes with a timeline of assessments, a plan, and evaluations at set points.

The arbodienst handles the medical side. Everything else sits with the employer.

What the timeline is actually for

The documents exist to record that something is happening, and the something is the point.

The plan is meant to be worked out with the employee. What they can manage now, what would have to change, what the next months should look like. The evaluations check whether any of that turned out to be right.

A file can be complete and the person in it no better than before. That is the outcome that costs two years of wages.

The part that is hard to do in-house

Working that out with someone means a conversation about how they are, what they are afraid of, and what they think is realistic.

In a small entity, the person holding the file also knows what the business can absorb, and may be their manager. Most employees will not say all of that to someone in that position.

It is also not what they were hired to do, on top of the job they already have. Careful administration and a conversation of that kind are different skills.

So the forms get completed on time and the thinking behind them stays thin.

Why early costs less than late

Support brought in during the first weeks is short. The employee is still close to work, the situation has not settled into positions, and the question is still open.

A year later both sides have learned to be careful with each other, and they know every exchange ends up in the file. The same support now takes much longer and achieves less.

The difficulty is that early on nothing feels urgent. The absence is recent, the arbodienst is involved, and the dates are being met.

What a small entity can arrange

The practical step is a route the employee can use without going through the person who handles their sick-leave file.

It gives them somewhere to work out what they can actually do, and it gives the employer a plan built on something real.

Workplace mental health support for organisations is the part most small entities add after a first difficult case. Adding it before is the same decision at a lower price.
